Trauma & Biohazard
Unattended Death Cleanup Austin TX
Compassionate, certified remediation of decomposition scenes — handled with care.
Decomposition byproducts penetrate subfloors, wall cavities, and concrete far beyond what's visible — standard cleaning spreads contamination rather than removing it. We respond with full discretion, handle insurance billing directly, and provide the clearance documentation property owners and estate executors require.
All services performed with complete discretion. Unmarked vehicles available upon request. We work directly with your insurance company and can assist with NDAs.
Overview
An unattended or undiscovered death presents some of the most technically demanding biohazard conditions our technicians encounter. When a person passes without immediate discovery, the decomposition process releases biological fluids, gases, and pathogens that penetrate porous building materials — including subfloors, wall cavities, and concrete — and create health hazards that cannot be addressed with standard cleaning products or general labor. The odor alone can permeate multiple rooms and persist for months if not properly remediated at the source. What families and property owners need in these moments is a team that combines technical expertise with genuine compassion. AAA Disaster Recovery responds to every unattended death call with that dual commitment. Our certified technicians handle all aspects of the remediation — from initial assessment and containment through deodorization and structural restoration — while our coordinators communicate with families, insurers, and property managers with the sensitivity these situations require. We serve Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Kyle, Buda, and all of Central Texas, available 24/7.
Our Process
How We Restore Safety
Scene Assessment & Scope Determination
Certified technicians evaluate the extent of decomposition, including visible contamination and any evidence of biological fluid migration into subfloors, wall cavities, or adjacent rooms. The full remediation scope is documented before any work begins.
Property Containment & Negative Air Pressure
Affected rooms are sealed with poly sheeting and placed under negative air pressure using HEPA-filtered air scrubbers. This prevents the spread of decomposition gases, odor-causing volatile organic compounds, and biological particulates throughout the unaffected portions of the property.
Biological Material Removal
All decomposition matter, saturated soft goods, and contaminated contents are removed using certified biohazard removal protocols. All waste is double-bagged in certified containers, manifested, and transported to a licensed biohazard disposal facility.
Structural Material Assessment & Removal
Subfloors, drywall, carpeting, insulation, and other porous materials with deep biological saturation are individually assessed. Materials that have absorbed decomposition fluids beyond decontaminable levels are carefully removed and disposed of as regulated biological waste.
Surface Disinfection
All remaining surfaces are treated with hospital-grade, EPA-registered disinfectants effective against decomposition-associated pathogens including C. difficile, MRSA, and other bacteria present in biological breakdown. Products are applied at required dwell times for verified kill.
Concrete & Structural Sealing
Concrete subfloors and structural framing that have absorbed biological compounds are treated with enzymatic cleaners and sealed with encapsulating agents that lock in residual odor-causing compounds and prevent future off-gassing. This step is critical for long-term odor elimination.
Industrial Deodorization
Ozone generators, hydroxyl generators, and thermal foggers are deployed to neutralize odor compounds at the molecular level. These treatments penetrate porous surfaces and airspaces that surface cleaning cannot reach, eliminating the source rather than masking it.
Restoration & Clearance
Structural repairs — subfloor replacement, drywall, insulation, paint — restore the property to pre-event condition. A final inspection confirms all contamination has been remediated and the property is safe for re-occupancy. Full documentation is provided for insurance and property management records.

Common Questions
FAQs
Why can't regular cleaners handle unattended death cleanup?
Decomposition fluids contain bloodborne pathogens including HIV, Hepatitis B/C, and numerous bacteria present in biological breakdown. Standard cleaning products are not EPA-rated for this level of contamination, and general labor is not trained in the containment, removal, and disposal protocols required by OSHA. Without certified remediation, biological contamination and odor will persist indefinitely.
Can the odor from a decomposition scene be fully eliminated?
Yes — with proper remediation. Surface cleaning and fragrance masking do not eliminate decomposition odor. Complete elimination requires removal of all saturated materials, enzymatic treatment of concrete and structural elements, and molecular deodorization using ozone or hydroxyl technology. When this process is completed correctly, the odor does not return.
Is this covered by the deceased's estate or homeowners insurance?
Remediation costs are often covered by the property owner's homeowners insurance under property damage provisions. In some cases, the estate may cover costs if the deceased owned the property. We work with families, property managers, estate attorneys, and insurance carriers to navigate billing as sensitively as possible — and we can often bill insurers directly.
How do you handle the situation if a family member is present?
We coordinate entirely around the family's needs. We can work while family is offsite, communicate only with a designated point of contact, and complete all work before anyone needs to return to the property. If a family member needs to be present, our coordinators will ensure they are supported and that no family member is exposed to the scene.
How long does an unattended death cleanup take?
A standard residential scene discovered within 1–3 weeks is typically completed in 1–2 days. Scenes involving longer periods or more extensive structural penetration may require 2–4 days of remediation plus additional time for structural repairs. We provide a detailed timeline after our initial assessment.
Do you notify any authorities or third parties?
We do not notify authorities unless required by law — and in most unattended death situations, law enforcement has already been involved before we are called. We do not discuss the nature of our work with neighbors, building staff, or anyone other than the designated property contact and their insurance carrier.
Can an apartment or rental property be re-rented after remediation?
Yes. Once our remediation is complete and the property passes our final inspection, it meets re-occupancy standards. We provide documentation confirming remediation completion, products used, and compliance with relevant standards — which landlords and property managers can retain for their records.
